Approximately 90% of people who are blind or visually impaired live in developing countries. Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness worldwide but can be cured with a 15-minute surgery. Prescription eyewear can correct visual impairment, and medical treatment can treat eye injuries and infections. Many times those with eye disease or vision problems do not receive care because they lack the funds or transportation to see an ophthalmologist. In some areas of the world, there are no ophthalmologists.
Surgical and Eye Care Mission Trips
Surgeons for Sight has traveled to Haiti, China, Ecuador and Honduras. Our current projects are in the Dominican Republic and El Salvador. We work with Centro Cristiano de Servicios Médicos, Inc. to provide cataract surgeries to those in desperate need in the Dominican Republic. We also work with corporate and community organizations in El Salvador to provide exams and screenings for those without viable options for eye care. Ophthalmologists and optometrists interested in accompanying us on one of our mission trips, should email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Missions Team Training
Surgeons for Sight trains missions groups to provide eye clinics and eyeglasses on existing missions trip. Using a device called a focometer, you and your team can find the correct eyeglass prescription for those that come to your clinic. Surgeons for Sight provides the training, focometer and eyeglasses for your team. In this way we are able to expand our reach. If your mission team is interested in dispensing eyeglasses on your trip, please contact us at email@example.com.
