Surgeons for Sight Receives $40,000 Greenville Women Giving Grant

GREENVILLE, S.C. May 12, 2011– Surgeons for Sight, a local non-profit whose mission is to provide eye care to the disadvantaged, has been awarded a $40,000 grant by Greenville Women Giving. The organization was founded by a group of ophthalmologists at Southern Eye Associates, who saw eye care as a desperate need in Greenville County.

The grant will go towards the project “Giving Sight to Greenville’s Most Needy” which aims to reach out to those in need in the Upstate by partnering with local organizations to provide vision screenings, eye exams, eyeglasses, and eye surgery to their clients. Jean Lilley, a Bon Secours St. Francis nurse at Triune Mercy Center, stated, “I really appreciate Surgeons for Sight reaching out to the community I serve and to other needy communities in the area. Receiving the ‘gift of sight’ allows my clients to move forward in their lives, many being held back because of visual problems that have not allowed them to fill out job applications or to read the newspaper.” The grant was awarded on May 11, 2011 and will allow Surgeons for Sight to expand their program. “The gift from Greenville Women Giving means so much to our organization. It allows us to set much higher goals for how many we can reach locally with eye care over the next two years.” said Felicia Murphy, Director of Development for Surgeons for Sight. Many patients have already received help from Surgeons for Sight in 2011 and additional screenings are planned for the upcoming months. Surgeons for Sight is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in Greenville, S.C. whose mission is to bring eye care to those in need, both locally and abroad. In addition to the local Greenville project, the organization goes on missions trips to perform eye surgeries in developing countries and trains missions groups to dispense eyeglasses on their trips.
